Deflect Boy, a game by Reima Project, is a unique top-down arena shooter where your only weapon is a shield. With its minimalist visuals and roguelike mechanics, it’s guaranteed to be your new addiction! Check it out!
Nothing but a Shield
This game comes in the style of a top-down arena shooter. You won’t be using the usual weapons like pistols or rifles. Instead, you’re only given one thing, a shield! Kinda like Tate no Yuusha.
In the gameplay, you’ll be dropped into a minimalist stage filled with colorful enemies. Not only do you have to survive, but you’ll also need to think fast about how to use your shield to take them down.
Because unlike normal shields, the one in Deflect Boy can actually turn into a deadly offensive weapon. So don’t be surprised if the gameplay turns out way wilder than you expected.
A Versatile Shield

As the title suggests, Deflect Boy lets you experience what it’s like to wield an energy shield that can deflect attacks. Every time you block an enemy’s projectile, you can bounce it back with the right timing and make them pay for their own attack.
Since you have to rely on deflecting, the game can feel super intense at times. Especially when enemies start pouring in from all directions.
But that’s not all. This shield can also be enhanced with different powers to become even deadlier. You can imbue it with lightning strikes to zap enemies, or explosive energy that clears an area when you’re surrounded.
All of these abilities unlock as you progress, and each run lets you choose a different path. So even with a simple concept, the variety makes every session surprisingly addictive.
Roguelike with Endless Possibilities

Speaking of runs, Deflect Boy isn’t just a regular arcade game. It has roguelike elements too.
That means every time you play, you’ll end up with different skill, buff, and strategy combinations. Sometimes you’ll focus purely on deflecting, other times you’ll stack lightning skills to fry groups of enemies. It’s totally up to you!
And each time you survive a wave, you’ll get to pick an upgrade for your shield. This is where the thrill of building your own playstyle comes in, making you want to jump back in over and over again.
But the ultimate goal stays the same, surviving till the very end! With so many paths and strategies available, the journey will always feel fresh.

Retro Visuals

When it comes to graphics, Deflect Boy carries that signature Reima Project vibe. Everything is represented with simple shapes like circles, triangles, and squares.
Your main character is shown as a small white circle holding a plain white shield, while enemies come in contrasting colors like red, yellow, and blue.
What makes it interesting is that for some reason the game has a VHS-style filter, like the old CRT televisions. Which I guess is to give off a retro arcade feel. Even with its minimalism, the developer clearly wanted to inject a nostalgic vibe.

For Challenge Seekers
If you love fast-paced and challenging games, Deflect Boy is right up your alley. At first glance, the concept may look super easy. But the longer you survive, the waves of enemies get way more brutal.
That’s where your reflexes, strategy, and shield builds really get tested. And with its roguelike system, every run can end in totally unexpected ways.
But honestly, that’s what makes retrying again and again so fun. You’re always going to be chasing that ultimate shield build.
Deflect Boy is definitely one of Reima Project’s works that absolutely deserves a try! With its mix of defensive and offensive shield powers, minimalist yet tense gameplay, and its retro charm.
