Simply put, the premise of Rising Hell is actually very simple in that the player has to escape hell. Doing so sure is not easy. You will play as a damned warrior (who can also be unlocked later on) and you have to jump, cut, and survive in an ever-changing tower filled with demonic enemies. Unlike most roguelikes in the action genre, the hero of this game does not work in the dungeons, but on the contrary, up. Each level is a vertical dungeon that chokes you with traps and monsters, and boss fights that can not wait to hurl you back down.

Every ascension is unique, due to procedurally generated levels that make it impossible to even tell what to expect. And just as in any good rogue-lite, death is a feature. You’ll fail. A lot. However, along with the failures come the opportunities to open new skills, characters, and strategies. That is why Rising Hell is so addictive a game: each run means a new challenge.

Thick Metal Atmosphere

The style and energy best of all differentiate Rising Hell. The game is intriguing right at the main menu when, after pressing on the Start button, you are swept in by the striking pixel style, which looks like a lit in blood and hellish patterns. Demons are not only looking threatening, they are threatening, they are sharp and chaotic performing animations and screen filling.

However, the biggest hit of the atmosphere was? The heavy metal soundtrack. It is also loud, quick and furious- just like the gameplay. Each riff and beat exactly fits your pace of the ascent. No matter whether it is jumping through the platforms or fighting giant bosses on the screen, each moment will be intense because of the music. And, when you are in love with games that have that arcade feel of your pulse running up each time you take the action, it hits the bullseye.

Gameplay That Keeps You Coming Back

Gameplay From Rising Hell

Rising Hell is not only style. The game has that satisfying tight responsive gameplay that feels good with each jump and each attack. There are several different characters with different weapons, combos, and abilities with which you can switch. They emphasize power or focus on agility, hence there are a lot of variations according to your individual playing style.

And, like in Dominion, perks and upgrades that you pick along the way make each run different. One run may make you a life stealing vortex of death; another will focus more upon long range havoc. Since these upgrades are randomized and stacked differently, each attempt is different. This is the reason why the game is still enjoyable despite multiple playthroughs.

And we cannot forget the bosses. Such confrontations are large, loud, and violent. Mashing the buttons will not be enough to make it through you should learn the patterns, learn how to strive the dodge and how to go in-game when everything should be on the line. These are some of the most gratifying wins in the game scenery.

A Must-Try for Action Fans and Metal Fans

Rising Hell is a type of the indie gem that should have much more attention. It is primitive, gritty and ridiculously enjoyable. There is the addictive gameplay loop, and the brutal aesthetic, everything about it yells passion and personality. No unnecessary hours-long tutorials, no tangled, complex lore to memorize, it simply throws you into the water and says something along the lines of “Let us go.”

That is, in case you are feeling the need to belt up some high-e energy, demon-killing, metal fueled half-way to non-servitude, do yourself a favor and try Rising Hell. Just don’t stop yelling at the game saying that it is the same run again. It happened on 3 AM.
