Transitioning from a prototype created for a game jam to a full-fledged commercial release is rarely a straight line for independent developers. It requires moving away from pure experimentation toward the realities of market demand and scope management. That exact transition is happening right now in Malang, Indonesia, where indie studio Narrative Detective is working to expand Rainy’s Episode from its game jam origins into a full PC release targeted for 2027.
Originally developed for Novejam 2025—a visual novel competition hosted by VN Project Indonesia—Rainy’s Episode earned a Jury’s Honorable Mention for its tense writing and unsettling atmosphere. Rather than letting the proof-of-concept rest on its accolades, the studio is reworking its visuals, expanding the story, and building out interactive mechanics to turn the short narrative into a complete commercial package.
What is Rainy’s Episode About?
Rainy’s Episode puts players inside the mind of Rainy, a university student who becomes involved with someone she meets in a library. What starts as a conventional romance story quickly shifts tone, asking players to navigate uncomfortable psychological territory where affection slowly curdles into obsession and manipulation.
Rather than presenting a simple romantic choice matrix, the game forces players to sit with discomfort. Through a mix of short-form interactive story beats and psychological minigames, players do not just observe Rainy’s mental state—they actively engage with her headspace. This design philosophy is matched by an eerie, high-contrast visual style meant to keep players constantly on edge as the narrative unravels.

How do Game Jam Titles Transition to Commercial Releases?
Making a game for a competition allows developers to experiment without market pressure, but commercial development introduces entirely different constraints. For Narrative Detective, moving to a paid Steam release meant re-evaluating every mechanic and art asset.
“For a commercial release, we need to adapt to the market and marketing realities,” explains Dany Muhammad, Programmer and Project Lead at Narrative Detective. “We can’t just be experimental anymore; we have to think about how this game will ultimately sell. In the end, there are a lot of things we need to change. But with limited resources, we have to set priorities—deciding what will strengthen the player experience and what needs to be set aside for now.”
This tension between pure narrative experimentation and commercial polish is a defining challenge for small indie teams. With the studio actively refining how its interactive mechanics represent the internal psyche of its characters, the focus remains on keeping the core emotional beats tight and impactful.
Why Does Narrative Storytelling Matter to Indie Studios?
For many small development teams, character-focused storytelling offers a way to create lasting experiences without needing massive technical pipelines. For the team at Narrative Detective, focusing on interactive fiction is less about following market trends and more about pursuing a long-standing passion.
“We hope this game can attract people who love narrative games,” Muhammad says. “Narrative games are our favorite genre, and it’s something we’ve wanted to develop for a long time. Our goal is to craft a story that is engaging and touching, just like the games that inspired us in the past.”
Designed to be experienced in a single, uninterrupted session, Rainy’s Episode aims to deliver a focused, atmospheric story that stays with players long after the credits roll. As development progresses toward its 2027 release window, Narrative Detective stands as another example of the growing Indonesian indie scene pushing deeper into narrative-heavy territory.
Rainy’s Episode is currently in development for PC. Players interested in following the game’s progress can watch the official teaser trailer on YouTube or add the title to their wishlist on Steam.
